The older generations grew up drinking good liquor, (because it's cheap) no mixer. Mixed drinks and cocktails have become popular in the last 20-30 years or so with the local economy going to shit and the islands relying more heavily on tourism.

I don't drink whiskey, so I'll use JD as an example since it's a known label. In the states, a 1.75L bottle of JD will cost anywhere from $28-$40, depending on the state. Here, it's about $12-$20, depending on where you shop. There are some stores here that jack the price up for tourist's, i.e "white people tax".

The difference, I'd assume is in the way it's taxed. Beer and wine are about the same price ,if not more expensive than back in Florida, but I don't think either are taxed the same way spirits are.
Also smokes, a carton of Marlboro red back in Florida was about $50 the last time I was there, here it's about $23
