Ulster (Northern Ireland) was originally colonised by protestant Scots from across the sea. Under the British Empire, and with the local Ulster Scots population, the industrialised urban centres of Ulster became protestant.
A lot of protestants have a bit of Scot in them, but a lot of Irish families became protestant in the mill towns just to get ahead.
Hence, all the poor peasants were Catholic, and the respectable Northern Irish families all became Presbyterian or Anglican.
