I think the current pope is too much of an idealist, that he only sees the suffering of these people, and not the short term and especially long term consequences of the arrival of migrants. And I'm no sure how I feel about the fact that he seems to want to a more open, less dogmatic church.
But we've had "bad" popes before, and we will have bad popes after. It's not going to change my opinion of the Church in general, and certainly not of Catholicism.

If I converted to Catholicism, I might get murdered or driven out of town. I live in a very xenophobic and very religious small town (< 200 people). A nice Buddhist family moved into town a few years ago and people would steal their garden ornaments, egg their house, and their house would get broken into every other month. Their youngest son would come back from school with scrapes and cuts because he was constantly getting beaten up at school. The single police officer we had didn't give a fuck. The Buddhist family moved out 6 months later. Only Protestants are allowed in my town.
