Esse meme do português do Brasil ser mais próximo do original não é bem verdade. Na verdade os dois estão já distantes, se bem que o de Portugal está um pouco mais próximo só pela proximidade geográfica. No Norte de Portugal é onde se fala a versão mais semelhante mesmo.
O do Brasil por sua vez evoluiu e com muita influência de sotaque tupi. Mesmo muita. Por exemplo, vocês dizem "lhe dizer" em vez de "dizer-lhe" como sempre foi dito. Usam o gerúndio em vez do infinitivo gerunditivo (estou indo em vez de estou a ir), como é dito desde os tempo do galaico-português, porque é assim que é dito em tupi. Não soletram os "rr" guturais (lêem como se fosse um H) porque em tupi não existe essa letra e era assim que os bandeiristas assimilados falavam para tentar substituir esse som. Há muitos outros exemplos.
Na verdade, o português do Brasil é uma verdadeira língua brasileira, o que dá muito mais identidade ao vosso país, imho. Passam a ser algo único, em vez de algo que fala a língua de outro país.

É verdade que o português brasileiro sofreu muita influência do tupi, mas vale lembrar que em todos os países, existiu sempre um "colonial lag" com relação à língua. As inovações linguísticas demoram que ocorrem na metrópole demoram bastante para chegar na colônia. Ou seja, as mudanças linguísticas que ocorriam em Portugal não ocorriam aqui, pelo menos não ao mesmo tempo e com a mesma intensidade.
