We're conditioned from our first day of school that we'll be utter failures in life unless we go to college. Doomed to a life of flipping burgers.
Combine this with the whole mindset of "Do whatever makes you happy :^)" that leads people to going to college for BS degrees that go nowhere.
Also combine that with the fact that high school is basically baby sitting, most kids are too afraid to go into the real world at 18 so they instead want to extend their time in academia to push off the inevitable.

Many are dumb, or they think they will make big $$, or they think an expensive college will get them a better job.
I worked in construction during college, paid for all my school.
It took me 5 years, but I graduated with no debt.
My wife worked 2 years at McDonalds to pay for community college, then 2 years at a bank to pay for state college, and also graduated with no debt.
It's not easy, I guess it's too hard for some. They would rather be in debt for years.

A lot of high school kids have never worked, never filed a tax return, never paid bills, have no direction or purpose in life, they're essentially babies.
So you go to the guidance counselor to plan what you're going to do with your life. They push college, college, college (it also makes their school look good if everyone gets into college). They tell you, "It doesn't matter what you major in, just get any degree, then you'll live in 6-figure middle class paradise."
Then they tell you, "It doesn't matter how much it costs, it's GOOD DEBT! You'll pay it off easily with your cushy job that your degree guarantees."
Trades are heavily discouraged because they make you look like a loser/redneck who's going to be poor trailer trash their whole life.
