Same happened here in the 20th century. Before WW II Eupen-Malmédy inhabitants were very pro-German. Even the native Wallon-speakers from Malmédy. They even paved the way for the invading army.
Their treatment as second-rate citizens and "traitors" during the war, has left such a trauma, that even today there is almost no rattachism sentiment left there.

When Brazilian soap operas started showing on TV, most people didn't understand them. After a while, it wasn't a problem because we got used to they way they spoke.
