Shitposting didn't even exist as a concept. There were forced memes, there was trolling, reposts and cancer like YLYL, but intentionally shitting up the place just for the sake of it was the domain of spambots.
Boards now universally considered beyond terrible (eg /v/) were actually useable. /b/, while shit, wasn't just a porn board.
Crossboard raids happened from time to time. Mostly done by /b/. Generally, /b/ was a much more important part of the site. Now you just forget it's even there.
The bogeyman (reddit, tumblr etc) were there (Gaia), but it wasn't nearly as much of an obsession as it is now. Or maybe that's jut how I remember it.
Much less ideological warfare.

Steganography. GOLD, rar concatenation, sound. Images often came with surprises. Especially pics of sinks.
More public bans and wordfilters.
More tripfags too. They kinda died off, comparatively.
No captchas. Plenty of spambot output.
No catalog, just browsing through the 10 pages manually. Later you could use an external one.
Everything moved slower in general. Fast boards weren't nearly as fast as they are now.
No archiving everything. Archives were vote-based and only stored threads that got enough of them.

None of the quality of life stuff like autonoko, reply chains, (You)s. You needed extensions for that.
Subject and email field. Mostly used for impersonating moot.
