What language is the most primitive one? Most people would say English is, but maybe you think otherwise. What methods are the most efficacious in a language learning process? I'm of the opinion that excessive reading on a daily basis is at the very least one of them. How long did it take you to become fluent? What is/are the language/languages that you're learning at the moment? Discuss!
P.S. Please don't point out my bad English because I know it myself.
>>

I'm currently learning Russian by myself. My girlfriend's parents grew up in communist Poland, so they're both fluent in it - so I can ask them for help every so often. Progress is extremely slow due to college though.
There's only one language that I say I've gained fluency in and that would be Irish. I done that by going to Gealtach every summer from 11 - 17, and just having an interest in languages. I'll agree with op and say English is primitive since it lacks the numerous ways to express yourself that Irish has.

We do have our TV stations here, short film industry. All through Irish. There's some really good books written through Irish also. I even think Iceland has a lower number of Icelandic speakers when compared to Irish speakers. The reason being why there's no Irish in science and around the world now is that there's no reason for anyone to learn it. You've no reason, neither does that dick from Ukraine.

>What language is the most primitive one?
English is more excessively simplified rather than primitive. I like to see a primitive language as inefficient and bad at expressing complex situations we face in daily lives. Compared to Turkish and German, English might be counted as primitive. But there is definitely much more primitive languages than that. I dunno, Indonesian or some shit. If I'm not wrong, they say sth like "table table" to express the plural form of "table".

>What methods are the most efficacious in a language learning process?
Reading, watching and trying to speak (alone is also ok) in that language. You have to do a lot of repeating in many ways possible.

>How long did it take you to become fluent?
The only language I have become fluent is English and it has taken me roughly 8 years (Learned it in school, I'm lucky I was in a private school. State schools don't teach shit in Turkey). Along with Turkish, German is my native language too thanks to my German mother. Knowing a Germanic language made it much easier.

>What are the languages that you're learning at the moment?
I am currently learning Russian but do not want to improve it that much, B1/B2 level should be enough.
Weirdly, I want to learn Esperanto cuz I have an interest towards constructed languages. I'm even constructing my own, and complex cases can be efficiently expressed by it. It's all about keeping the balance between agglutination and synthesis.
I also want to learn French or Japanese or Spanish up to B2 level after Russian.

As someone who is interested in learning another language, but never got around to it, I have a question.
Is it alright to learn by comparing the language you are learning to your own? For example, if I tried to remember a character by how it looks similar to an English character which makes a similar sound. Would it be best to try and learn the language as though I didn't know English (within reason of course)? I just feel like a dependency on English would make it harder to become fluent in the desired language in the long run.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, I'm new to /int/, but I really want to know this.
>>
>>58266186
Man... I know it's correct but I can't tell you why, it happens so often in French. My guess is it has something to do with the negation and/or how it sounds.

Your "advanced" slavic language declines nouns for all sorts of things yet you can't handle the way English nouns decline for being definite or not.

Congratulations on failing at a 'simple' language.
>>
>>58267234
It is simple. I was fluent in English by age of 12. The fact i don't perfectly use grammar is irrelevant. I can survive in anglo country and have conversations in English about p much everything

At least they have proper verb conjugation.
>>
>>58267597

I object to the notion of "primitive" meaning analytic languages (for example mandarin) and "advanced" meaning synthetic languages like slavic languages.

the devil is in the details, the complexities of English lie in the choice of words and register.

for example, a language like Italian is more complicated than English, but simpler in terms of word choice, everything in italy is "bello", whereas in English it's "nice" "fine" "pretty" "good-looking" "beautiful", "great" depending on the thing being talked abou.t

We don't say "Frau" though. We say "Vrauw" You can't leave the "w" out. Though I agree that the "v" is pronounced like "f" in fast, informal speech.
And the "w" is a Dutch/German W obviously.

But the Dutch "J" is pretty much always pronounced like the "Y" at the start of a word in English.
It may not register that way to you, but to me, it seems unnatural to pronounce it like "Dzj", just like the English "W" sounds more like "Ou" than what registers in my head as a "W" (Closer to a Hv). Seriously, what's up with having the W be a vowel?

IIRC, there's a tribe in Africa whose entire vocabulary is composed of like, 14 words.

Maybe phonemes but not words. Toki Pona is a conlang designed to have as few root words as possible. It has about 200 root words (with which you can compose as many new words as you can imagine).
I've heard of a language that has 14 phonemes but not in Africa. It's here BTW >>58283812

they've had a troubled past, communist regimes etc which completely changed the course of their countries

Yes, that's true. I think it's a shame that not one single Slavic country has been capitalist historically up until now. I think some of them could easily have been on the same level as most western euro countries if they weren't derailed completely by communism.

I'm gonna try. I'm learning Mandarin atm and it's pretty easy desu. With Cantonese though I'm very worried about the increase in number of tones. The difference between the mid flat tone, the mid-low flat tone, and the mid to low falling tone is almost non-existent to my ears. It makes me wonder how natives even learn the distinction with those three tones since they are so close.

I dunno; it's a good question. The USSR's failure was pretty catastrophic for almost everyone involved, but a handful of post-communist states have done reasonably well compared to other countries that have no reason to be doing as badly as they are. China's still doing alright, despite its half-communist politics, although it is not true that it's on equal footing with western countries generally.

I suppose if anyone knows of a country with a Slavic majority, ie. >50%, that was both (1) never communist/USSR, and (2) has persisted as its own state through the same time period as the USSR, then you could probably take a stab at the answer. It'd still be "alternate verse" pseudohistorical bs, but at least it would be relatively informed compared with this shitpost "wut if Hitler PBUH cured cancer :DD" threads on /his/.

Man I've been teaching myself German for about a year now. I still struggle through Harry Potter and /deutsch/ but I do understand all sentences even if I can't nail the precise meaning of all words involved. Not too impressive but it feels pretty good man.

If I have absolutely no one to learn with/talk to what can I do in order to beef up my listening and speaking? I've been watching Easy German on youtube amongst other things so I can pick up some naturally spoken German but I still can't form a sentence longer than 10 words since I only consume the language, never produce it. I have a few grammar books with exercises in them but I just do not learn well with declension tables and shit like that. Reading normals books helped me exponentially more once I learned basic grammar. I prefer to puzzle things out than get told time determiners go after the primary verb or whatever.

Bit of a wall of text here I guess.

it's just a chat with multiple people in it. you can write german there and other people will correct it.

using the language is extremely important, you have no idea. if you don't actually force yourself to write german with native speakers or skilled learners you'll certainly never learn the language.

that's because you'll never be made aware of the mistakes you're making, which will make progress painfully slow.

>What language is the most primitive?
That would be spanish for me, even if it's hard to master completely, its basic skills and the pronounciation itself are very forgiving for beginners.

>What methods are the most efficient in learning a language?
Immersing yourself around an enviroment of people who speak the language on a daily basis.
Look, I'm not trying to be racist, but even fucking braindead mongoloid spine cord damaged refugees from shitfuckistan can learn a skandi language (all of which are pretty difficult) even if they don't even know what an alphabet is when they step on the country for the first time.

Every fucker knows that those words are different in a way. The point I was trying to make is that Italian also has a huge plethora of words and expression and so does every language in its own way. Which makes Italian grammar-wise much harder than English is.
>>

>What language is the most primitive one? Most people would say English is
Nigger, there are African and Australian Aboriginal languages that consist of less than 1000 words

>Which makes Italian grammar-wise much harder than English is.
I meant that the only reason why English may be harder than Italian is due to writing. Otherwise, Italian is objectively harder.

Anyone ever use Mondly? How is it?
>>
English isn't complex but it has adapted itself far better than Persian or Mandarin or any other analytic language at expressing ideas, it doesn't have the hang ups of verbal roots or a tonal system. Complexity means more than grammar and conjugation, many primitive languages like the Najavo used by code talkers in WW2, or Swahili and so on often conjugate words to far greater extremes than German or Russian or even Latin, and may conjugate a word so much a single "word" with all kinds of grammatical stems expressing different ideas attached can compose an entire sentence. Really it all comes down to what defines Agglunative/Synthetic/etc. But I get the idea that the arguments being made here are pointing towards, "Because this language is less complex it isn't as capable at expressing ideas" which is silly desu
>>
Many say English was chosen to be a lingua franca on account of its primitiveness and accessibility for everyone. And I think noone has ever been able to refute this statement. Feel bad for English monoglots though, their minds are already shaped primitively.
