It wasn't Wahhabism. It was the Iranian Revolution in Iran and the subsequent 8-year long war with Iraq, the Grand Mosque seizure by Islamist radicals in Mecca, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, all of which happened in 1979 which changed the face of political Islam in the Middle East.
1979 was the watershed year which changed everything. After that, both the new revolutionary Iranian government and Saudi Arabia started funding sectarian religious ideology all over the Islamic world as part of a proxy war to gain influence in the Gulf, squash nascent opposition at home, and dominate each other in the Middle East.
