Well google says they're called spits. Vistula Spit, Curonian Spit. Strange name.
I don't think they will diminish. Actually we have couple of lakes which were created this way, made by sea closing shallow bays with sand spits.
The Vistula Spit will be pierced with a channel in few years because we have a port down there (Elbląg) and the only waterway goes through the Russian waters, and Russians are notorious for closing the waterway just because.
