I think a lot of it comes from Europe's pre-Christian religions. For example, the belief in witches and curses that lead to witch hunts, came from Germanic paganism. In the new world, Anglo-Saxon settlers in New England created a lot of spooky stories because they still had some pagan beliefs that, in their minds, lent some credibility to "Indian magic/witchcraft" which they used to explain negative events. Also, stories about people, especially women, dancing naked in the forest as some sort of Satanic ritual also comes from Germanic paganism that was incorporated into Christianity before being stamped out by the church.
