That's a very interesting point, and I know this is the way many foreigners see things but it isn't that simple.
The French government does not do this at all. The French government is definitely NOT this intolerant, extreme-atheist, "islamophobic" regime that the international media depicts.
Quite the opposite.
Laïcity is strongly criticized by the official powers, laïcity is decried as racist. Ministers and other public figures speak against laïcity. Subventions are given for artists who speak against laïcity.
Hollande most certainly wants to destroy laïcity, like the rest of the establishment.
Only the fn and fringe elements of the left actually support laïcity.
The point is the French government is, probably willingly, taking on the bad role here, but in case you didn't realize they have the exact opposite behaviour inside the country.
