I'm playing with Danish (which I'm doing ok at) and Finnish (which I suck at) on Mondly and Memrise.

Everything could be considered left wing biased according to local morons. I used A.J.Hoge course while learning English and that guy had lessons about beatniks, being an emotional intelligent husband etc so he would be considered left biased by local edgelords too despite it's the most popular audiocourse of English worldwide.
Btw, talking about audiocourses, I've came eventually to conclusion that they are useful on a very entry level only. You'd better listen to audio books, lectures and so reaching movies level at the end.

RFI is news station, I believe the fourth most heard worldwide after Voice of America, RT, and BBC.

When I went to Africa, I was surprised how many people listened to RFI. There are a many emissions specially for them, notably one about health that's doing god's work IMO, even though it sounds silly to our western ears (saying that homosexuality is different from paedophilia, why and how you should wear condoms, some stuff about hygiene, women's body autonomy...)

It's sad, but it's needed in some parts of Africa.

I have been speaking English for more than 20 years and I still have only a vague idea of what the grammar entails and highly imperfect pronunciation.

I've just picked up the bare basics of German after 7 years of study - I know maybe 20, 30 words, the article declensions, and I have a developed a pretty good intuition for irregular verb forms.

So you see, just about anyone can learn a language eventually, even someone with an IQ of literally 80, like me. No need to time yourself and hold yourself to a high standard.

It depends on when you start learning it. English is my second mother tongue so even though I didn't start speaking it until I turned 5 I was fairly proficient by the time I turned 8. Finnish however I've only spoken for the past 4 years and despite speaking it daily I still sound like Tarzan even though most Finns refuse to admit it. I mean, come on, a flashcard app made specifically for language learning which has no way to easily integrate things such as declensions? Only an anglolard would be so dimwitted as to include nothing more than the nominal form of a word and absolutely nothing else.

And it's not like it's hard from a programming point of view either. I'm a babby-tier programmer with no fucking experience who's learning while doing this project, and yet I've already done a lot of progress and I have no doubts that I'll be able to complete it eventually.

Hi

I'm a hyper-cyber-ultra-techno polyglot, AMA

BUT if I'm to help you with language learning, please state why are you into it at all (ie, business, cultural heritage, getting raped abroad...) so that I can counsel you not in the abstract, but upon your needs.

Lastly, if you are willing and able to do e-mail-language-exchange in Hindi or Mandarin, I'd be interested. I can provide French, Italian, Catalan, Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, German or maybe even English in return.

Could you please correct my phrase here (>>58188356) ?

French is also very hard - 3 conjugations, 4-5 majors tenses, 3 moods, 2 voices (passive and actives), a retarded-yet-logical orthography and pronunciation, élision & liasion. Yet a lot of people seems to want to learn French.
>>
>>58188571
/fr/ is majorly written French with some kinds of spoken French IMO.

It's also a very cancerous general.
>>
>>58187783
It means the same, the other sentence just says 'the mother'. Weird in english but makes sense in north germanic languages
>>
>>58188356
>yмeть гoвopить пo-pyccкий - вaжнo, ecли я бyдy paбoтaть c Eвpoпa
Not more important than speaking Arabic, Turkish or other language neighbourghing Europe.

No the most interesting Russian author btw. 19th century writers are considered classics in Russia but almost no one likes them frankly. Tolstoy's War and Peace is the meme meaning long and boring book, for example. And modern or 20th century Russian literature wouldn't be interesting for foreigner I guess because 19th century writers tried to copy Europe so their masterpiece would be familiar and hence interesting to you but later Russian authors ceased to copy European styles and wrote about things and in a way that won't be interesting for Westerner.
>>
>>58188644
come on French is not that hard. It's basically spanish with different prononciation and silent letters.
>>
Gonna start Russian over the summer after I'm doing with my Spanish requirement this year.

How many languages do you guys know?
4 here, which by definition should make me a polyglot. 2 of those are extremely irrelevant languages though, namely Mingrelian and Georgian.

Wait, what's the distinction between written and spoken French/Finish? I'm not sure I follow.

The history is still interesting, and I like meme-long books - I've started Proust and I read Philosophy for fuck's sake.

Thanks you very much for advice.

English and French

How does Mingrelian compare with Georgian?

Also what's the other language besides English, Georgian, and Mingrelian?

You think this is hard? For example, Hungarian is much more difficult

I was just making a remark on how /fr/ was mostly written languages.

Written French, for example, always uses double negatives, no informal elision (Tu es does not become t'es), subjunctive after "if" and any unreal situation, tenses concordances, and so on.

>>58188856
Not really. If it were you would be able to understand a Spanish person speaking or you would be able to read Spanish, which is not the case.
Formal French with the subjunctive, tenses concordances, our 9001 homonyms and our weird articles is probably hard.
>>
>>58189062
Russian of course. All Georgians speak Russian as all the peoples of Soviet Union except balt youths (because they are russophobic cunts).
>>
>>58189027
Thanks. I tend to forget that proper nouns have declensions in Russian, and I lack a bit of vocabulary.

Why знaть instead of yмeть гoвopить though ?
>>
>>58189062
Words are similar, but the languages aren't mutually intelligible.
>Also what's the other language besides English, Georgian, and Mingrelian?
Russian because I grew up within the Ukrainian expat community in western Georgia.

>>58189125
noice, but aren't Scandinavian languages mutually intelligible? Doesn't really count 2bh

It's the same here as well though. None of my friends in Batumi or Tbilisi speak Russian, but people over 35 are usually pretty fluent.

Creo que bien, los que no puedo entender son los españoles - ellos hablan muy rápido. Nosotros en Brasil tenemos una expressíon para esto "eles falam como se tivessem que tirar o pai da forca"
También a veces mezclo portugués con español pero creo que esto no es un problema

Have you (and other Spanish speakers reading that) ever tried to learn Portuguese? I feel like it's hard for you guys

Not that much distinction between spoken and written french. Speaking finnish ''like a book'' would be grammatically correct, but it would sound super formal.

well, had some classes were there were some muslims. I'm not sure how many cause they didnt talk about it much. They didn't seem to care much either, mostly just doing stuff because their parents wanted them too.

Well, im not really just learning turkish for the usefulness, but even that seems to have some perks. Look at all the turkic languages in the world, which would be a lot easier to learn after ive learned one of them.

Most of them are irrelevant though.

For what? I don't expect it to advance my career or something. I just like languages in general, and I also like traveling. I would love to travel around central asia and be able to speak with the inhabitants in their own language.

I'm learning French because it's the language of the Normans.

It's the only way to move up in British society these days.
>>
I'm trying to do Turkish and Urdu, already have four years of Spanish under my belt but I didn't really get invested in it until the last two years, now I wish I could go back and redo that with more effort.

I fell in love with Turkish culture in the process of learning it. I started with using Duolingo and FSI books, as well as whatever online resources I can find, but it's only the basics. I can't really read publications like Sabah, but try to look at words and listen to Turkish news to see if I can pick up on words.

Any pointers for material or strategies to help learn? I finished the Duolingo course and am looking for a (preferably gameifed) lesson-based format to progress in with intermediate stuff.

It's always good to learn a foreigner language, do not listen them my Norsk friend. There's a Hungarian saying "a man is worth the number of languages he speaks".

I'm currently learning German and I'm loving it. It's such a good hobby, I've also been invited to a language club in my city - great people, great coffee.

Yup, German, Russian* and Croatians.
Unfortunately I'm not from one of those areas so I can't really tell much about it and that subject is also quite extensive.
In the South they learn it in school with English and Spanish. They usually speak Low German at home and learn High German at school.
But you have to keep in mind that they are a minority

That's the most complete article about it but unfortunately it's only in Portuguese
