It's basically terrible.
People are uneducated, high school drop outs.
Nobody there has been to university except for the local doctor.

Atleast in my home state - you could drive for 100s of km and see literally nothing but the same thing. Scrub, small hardy trees and red dirt.
A lot of the outback towns are depressing as fuck and some are just outright shitholes, although despite what some of the people said above you can find some pretty salt of the earth people up there. Massive amounts of pissheads though, because theres literally fuck all to do other than go to the pub most of the time. Substance abuse is pretty rife among the aboriginals.
Honestly, it takes a special kind of person to live out there. Some fall in love with the land, honestly despite the vast amounts fuck all between them - you'll find some pretty mindblowingly beautiful views.
Source - lived in West Aus most of my life and travelled a lot of it for work.

Most stay on mining camps, some higher execs get a house to stay in. But they rarely live out there full time.

I've lived in the Outback.
Lived in a town called Mount Isa when I was a kid.
It was kind of fun, there was lots of frogs and lizards and giant insects and shit so as a kid I spent many nights out, running around town collecting animals.
Pool cost 50cents to go into, movies cost $2.
That being said, the closest grocery shopping was in Townsville 9 hours away, so it was an 18 hour round trip to do grocery shopping.
I also lived in the Alpine mountains as well in a tiny little cabin at (-36.302009, 148.314701) for about a year doing maintenance work for the snowy hydro project.
That though was boring as absolute fucking shit and ruined my social life and relationship with my long term girlfriend.
