Japan has never been a colony, even though it studied the West.
Remember, why did Japan go to the trouble of changing itself into an empire, putting an end to the long kept comfy isolation period, in the first place? It's all about national defense. Certainly, Japan took Asian neighbors, but if you didn't, then other colonial powers, which had already had lots of colonies, did, which must have put you in a more unfavorable position in the system of the world back then. Of course, ultimately, it would be egotism, but it's a passive one to fend off incoming menace, that's what I mean by "counter". Also, under the situation, Japan did care for the well-being of neighbors as much as possible. Objectively speaking, Japanese rule was one of the most generous ones in the world, not only building infrastructure but also encouraging education to commoners.
