We put salt in the fridge to keep the bugs out. In Europe, they don't do this because it's either too cold for bugs, or there's bugs in everything so they don't mind.
But in America, especially in the South, they keep salt in the fridge to deter bugs from getting in them. Same reason we put condoms in the fridge before using them.
