Subway systems need a surprising around of maintenance and keepup. Because most places have decreased passenger load at night, they just shut down the subway and use night buses instead.
Additionally, for bigger engineering and repair works, most lines usually close down for a significantly larger amount of time, usually weeks or months, every few years. DC metro right now is about to close for a few months I think.

Everybody is building modern light rail systems now. You have one in Stockholm. They're a good middle ground between buses and actual trains because they're much cheaper and more flexible than actual train lines but can transport a decent amount of people. In some ways it's also more convenient that the station is on the street
