The Americans needed a good beating.
Containment is a legitimate foreign policy if you can retain the upper-hand. It's pretty simple: less countries that a gommies, the less powerful the Soviets are. Cases where it's successively done and contained are often inherently not known to the public. The difference with Nam' is that we invested far too much in it and shoulda abandoned it sooner considering how not-worth it was. I personally blame the Moon-landing for inflating our pride too much.
At-least we got to test out some new weapons / planes / tactics during it. We probably wouldn't have developed attack helicopters much later if we didn't go in a conflict like 'Nam, and stuck with planes for CAS.

The Korean war was never about unifying Korea as a capitalist country, it started when the North invaded the South and wanted to turn it all commie.
So the war was successful in preventing that from happening and restoring the status quo so containment was achieved.

Only Cuba and North Korea are still actually communist. The others are nominally communist, but are just single party, authoritarian capitalist countries like China.
