I love Japanese ramen and other noodle dishes like soba, but Sushi is really overrated. Granted, I've never ate at Jirou's or whatever, but I've never eaten at some michelin star pizza, Chinese, Thai, or steak place either but I enjoy those much more.
I think the reason why sushi is so popular is because of all the myths and misconceptions associated with it. People think that sushi was eaten for like thousands of years by the aristocracy of Japan or whatever, but sushi, as we know it today, not the original sushi which is nothing like today's sushi, was a street food first created like 150 years ago. In America at least, people eat sushi because it's hip. I'd much rather see all the sushi joints in America replaced with Japanese ramen houses or Japanese restaurants of other kinds.
