i work with a protestant man from northern ireland and he's doesn't really care if he's called irish or british.
he always refers to himself as northern irish when meeting people however. i believe most of them do, and then see themselves as irish or british secondary.

The majority, at least where I'm from will not consider themselves "Northern Irish" in terms of identity. The Catholics I know see themselves as Irish, and the Protestants near my area take themselves and being very British.
