So blacks never owned many slaves, those that did owned family members. I think it's important to contextualize manumission laws that got stricter as time went on.
There was a small mixed race elite that owned slaves, mostly because their white fathers raised them to see themselves as white, that is why southern states have the highest proportions of whites with African ancestry.
"Blackness" as a concept, identity and politic don't intersect. Africans didn't see themselves as blacks, mixed race people didn't necessarily see themselves as blacks or care about black issues.
