I remember one summer, my parents were in another county to work and I was home alone because they didn't allow me to keep friends. It was 100 degrees on this day which is understandable, I live in a desert. Keep in mind the water on tap is awful and makes me sick because I live in a desert and it's literally only good for washing stuff. I scourged the house looking for water bottles to quench my thirst. I had to walk 30 minutes to the local convenience store to bring back a few cans of water. It was awful.
The issue with kids starving is because a lot of parents buy their kids kid food which is trashy, sugary gunk they think children will like but it's godawful. And teaching your kids to cook is not a popular idea anymore.
