I think native English speakers commonly have that problem for some reason, probably because both sounds are used for the letter 'a' in English. Car and cat sound different, but they use the same letter. Those sounds are just seperated in Finnish.

They both sound like ä to me when they're short and a when they're long. Hopefully I'll get around to grasping it soon, but my Finnish still sucks.
I even joined Mondly (got the premium for free) and it's not great unfortunately. I can't check the grammar on it a lot of the time because the hints are often not correct for the sentence.

I don't have any trouble with the vowels I don't think. I have a fucking tonne of resources on learning Finnish, about 19GB worth -- but I'm not impressed with most of them. They introduce things extremely basically but never get any more complex, then all of a sudden shoot in complexity. It's annoying.
The long vowels aren't too much trouble for me, surprisingly; just a vs ä, usually, and I can usually tell when it's longer, I think.
