We're going to talk about open carry in the US because I spent 10 minutes writing this only to find out the thread 404'd.

Good for them, not only is their chance of getting mugged substantially lower, but so are the chances for everyone within eyeshot of them. Most muggers notice that shit (that's why they make it so obvious) and stay away.
Besides that, they can prevent crimes from occuring even if they do happen. Some mugger threatens some lady across the street with a knife, you yell "HEY!", they see your gun, they bolt it if they have even the smallest inkling of sense. If theu have a gun, they'll still feel less in-control, plus you can hold them where they are until a lot of time passes, giving the cops more time to arrive and working in your favor.

I'm 27 years old and have witnessed 3 robberies, and I don't even go outside that much. My mom was the victim of one at knifepoint, and my grandpa was too (he ended up overpowering the guy and breaking his ribs and jaw, lel). My dad has witnessed I think 5, one wasn't even in the US (it was in Scotland, some town called "Dune-something", near Inverness). Not to mention the several times we were burgularized. We live in New Orleans, but still, just shows how common these things are.
What are the downsides? You might have some wackjob go crazy firing on the crowd, but they can do that just as easily without an open-carry liscence. Maybe someone could steal it, but can't you say the same thing for phones? If they start to steal it (it would not be an easy task since it's strapped onto you), you can easily muscle your way out of it and/or call for help, allowing you a chance to take your gun and gain the upper hand. Only other "downside" is liberal tears, which I am 100% in favor of.
Tl;dr it looks funny but it's extremely logical.
