I don't know whom it belongs to really. Wasn't it part of the Eastern Frankish Empire? I guess it belongs to whomever can conquer and hold it, like all other Land in the world (see: natives in the US)

With the time french langage mixed with it, and some words in alsatian are just french words.
At first it was a germano-cekt region, triboques filled it (Strasbourg was called "Argentoratum" by romans) then came alemanic people (germanic-frisians-suave) and mixed with the first people.
After that frankish conquered the region which became a part of the frankish empire.
After the frankish scission it was a part of the east Francia, then the holy roman empire.
Until Louis XIV during the XVII° century, he conquered Alsace and Lorraine, made the good borders (rhine).
Honestly, Alsace is a french region in heart, but a german region in efficiency.
Alsatian people was one of the first outside during the revolution.
It's not a surprise if I say to you that it's one of the wealthier region in France while it is the smallest.
