this is true. people have low expectations of americans. for example, whenever I speak to someone in their native tongue, they're shocked that an american speaks a foreign language. They don't realize that the people who study in their country, especially if it's a top uni, are typically much better educated than the average person.
So.. yes people will look down on you, but they won't be overtly rude or anything (they're too timid for that I suppose). And if you know their language they will take a quick liking to you.
