What is it about France that makes it the only succesful Latin nation, whereas the others (Spain, Portugal, Italy) are and to a certain extant always have been widely unsuccesful?
France has given the world some of its finest thinkers, mathematicians, scientists, psychologists, philosophers and artists while Spain and Italy only produced good artists (and a handful of Renaissance thinkers) while Portugal produced nothing of the sort. Scientifically speaking the achievements of the Latins are underwhelming to put it lightly.
Even if we look at history, what we see in Spain and Portugal is incompetent leadership and mismanagement. The rise of these two countries to greatness is accidentily happening upon gold and silver, using it to build up their armies and fleets, dominating Europe for about a century and then quietly fading into the night. What they achieved (or rather found) in 1492 was gone by 1648. Compare France which did not achieve because of its colonies but gained colonies because of its achievements. France had some notoriously incompetent leaders, but many great ones as well and a pretty solid administration overall. As for Italy, it seems like their unification only caused things to go downhill rather than uphill.

Italy has been very successful since the Middle Ages. Italians have always been awesome artists, scientists and inventors. It is a mistake to class Italy as nonsuccessful.
Maybe your question is why we were not as successful as France *in the 19th century*, and the short answer is population and religion.
During the world empire era, France was a country with a huge population, like 5 times bigger than that of Spain. Portugal always had a small population. This did not help an equal competition with France.
Then there is the fact that the Catholic Church controlled education very tightly in our countries. Memorising the lives of saints was more important than the scientific method in our universities. The French rebelled against that crap, chopped off the heads of reactionary clerics and gave us the metric system and the Encyclopedia.
Nevertheless, Spain and Portugal were still kind of competitive up until Napoleon's empire. Take seismology or urban planning for instance, those were started in the modern sense with Pombal's reconstruction of Lisbon. You can also take the Balmis expedition, the first large-scale vaccination program in the world: undertaken by the Spanish empire when it was unmistakably decaying.
The failure to join the industrial revolution is what screwed up our countries. Not enough people to create any sort of industry, and even less educated people because of the Church's grip on education.

also it's because you're talking about countries living in the extremes of a continent who were much more oriented towards mercantilism, and particularly as a nation.
countries like france and england were more connected to the struggles of central europe and thus managed to create more important achievements later on
meanwhile the netherlands and germany as a nation accomplished nothing. private individuals maybe but as nations they were complete failures and clusterfucks.
when the 20th century came about with all its revolutions towards autonomy and individualism came about, the people in these countries did better than the ones in countries that had developed specifically towards nation-building.
so spain and portugal actually have communist parties in the 21st century, because people actually feel united as a nation. which isn't the case at all in a place like germany
