Czech Republic aims to be called Czechia in English
http://www.praguemonitor.com/2016/04/13/czech-republic-aims-be-called-czechia-english
What do you lads think of this?
Japan is called nihon and china is called zhunguo in their own language
Nonody shit cares.
Kazakhstan also wanted to rename it but white noggers opposed against it.
Qazaq el
Chechnya
checkia sounds disgusting, it doesn't work linguistically in english
We'll be annexed by Russian Federation in a decade so why should I care about anything my goverment does?
Why do they even try? It's not their language so they can just fuck off.
It's like Ukraine trying to change Russian

wut
>>57857025
English is very multicultural and diverse, we accept suggestions from everyone :)
Weird.
Czech girl at german uni didn't like "tschechie" vs "tschechien" because it had a nazi connotation.
czechia sounds too similar to chechnya
or would it be pronounced checkia?
>>57857361
Check-ee-ah
>>57857414
>>57856912
...meh. I already use the word because it's shorter, but who really cares?
>>57856976
It works as well in English as check and "Australia".
>>57857471
Those two things aren't the same.
>>57856976
in bulgarian
'chekia' means a handjob
>>57857508
Check and Czech are homophones; /tʃɛk/
The ending is the same as in Australia.
Czech Republis is Tsjekkia in norwegian. Never thouhgt about why it isnt Czechia in English.
>>57857537
Think more holistically. eh-kee-ah is not the same as al-ya. One is much more comfortable and they aren't really pronounced the same way. ia = ya vs ia = ee-ah
India = Hindustan
Russia = Rossiya
Germany = Deutscheland
Italy = Italia
Greece = Hellas
Romania = Rumania
Syria = Surya or Sham
Spain = Hispania
>>57857613
Are you saying that because of the vowel pattern, or because of the consonant before the suffix?
If the former: it still works linguistically, unlike what >>57856976 said.
If the late, I guess English has plenty occurrences of /kjV/ already.
[And nothing stops you guys from pronouncing the "e" as in "Nigeria"]
>>57856912
>Czech Republic
Did you mean CZECHOSLOVAKIA?
And while we're at it: "Chekia". Using CZ in English is silly.
>>57857731
>>57856949
By the article, the case isn't to make it sound in English like in Czech, but to give the country a shortened name.
>>57856976
No I mean it really does sound disgusting, not that it doesn't technically work. Australia is fine, Checkia is ear rape.
>>57857860
Maybe you aren't used to the word enough to consider it natural. I'm serious.
>>57857872
Any native English speaker would agree with me, it's just wrong. Check Republic works much better, maybe there could be good alternatives though
>>57856976
This
Why not Czechland? Why is it always Latin suffixes?
>>57857755
Maybe I'm communicating it poorly because it's just about how native speakers speak, but I'm not the only person in this thread to say it feels uncomfortable to say. I actually personally do say it that way because saying republic every time is silly, but I think it's awkward to say. Kia motors is sort of awkward too, but putting an eh in front makes it worse. If we pronounced the E like a we do in Nigeria, it would be Cheeky-ah.
>>57857157
>because it had a nazi connotation.
what
Can't we just call it Bohemia?
>>57859256
sadly no it would make Moravians buttmad
oh wow, another great bright idea from our great bright politicians
someone pls nuke us already
>>57856956
This
Fucking Czechs doing the Boston bombing
>>57856912
Sounds ugly
>>57859330
Bohemia-Moravia?
>>57863415
This
Czech Republic sounds better. Czechia is too artificial imo
>>57857537
>homophones
>>57856912
we'll call it what we fucking want in our own fucking language
>>57856949
This.
You don't see me complaining about NZ being pronounced as "nyuu jiirando" in japspeak.
>>57856912
>Czechia
lmao, it just doesn't work in English, we already call it Чeхия though
>>57856912
i do not like it, it sounds terrible and czech land is only the west part of the czech republic
It's called Tsjechië in Dutch.
>>57856912
Call it Bohemia
sure why not
We already call it that so not much
Anyone have a list of how every cunt is called in its native language? Google gives me nothing. Thanks.
>>57867956
Google maps show the native language names.
>>57867828
T H I S
>>57856912
I could care less.
>>57870300
Are you saying you could care less meaning you do care or you couldn't care less meaning you don't care.
>>57870421
Both. I mean I do care a little bit but not enough to shill in either way.
I kinda like "Czechia", but I also think it's really trivial and unimportant issue.
>>57867828
Second this.
>>57867828
But Bohemia along with Moravia and Silesia is a region within Czech Republic... so it's only 1/3 maybe 1/2 of entire Czech Republic
>>57857731
>hispania
>>57870564
>>57867828
It's like calling Netherlands "Holland" or calling UK "England"
>>57870610
Most people do that anyway because it sounds better. Bohemia is a great sounding name is English.
Also Iran should be called Persia because it sounds better in English
Reminds me when Boston bombing happened and yanks freaked out and blamed 'Czech Republicans'
>>57856912
Its already called Tsjechia in dutch so I dont really care
in croatian
noun:
češka - czech republic
verb:
češkati - to scratch
I'm okay with Tchéquie (czechy)
Tsekki pls
>>57870564
>Silesia
>Czech Republic
Silesia has nothing to do with Czech since 7 years wars m8
>>57871503
what?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czech_Silesia
>>57871503
>>57856912
>Czechia
What should our name be in english? Suomia?
>>57857157
what a bullshit
>>57865349
That would make Bohemians buttmad, they can't stomach when Moravia is mentiones on the same level as they are
>>57875727
You already have Finland, what else do you want?
>>57870656
>be in UK
>say England
>while talking about UK
>get jailed
>>57856980
I fight them.
>>57875922
t. Bohemian
>>57871589
It's like talking about Catalonia as a part of France for Roussillon
>>57875904
People calling us by our real name :^()
It's not about renaming you digheads.
It's about the fact that all the languages but English use a short geographical name normally. Only English, which is unfortunately a language no.1 used in several international organizations etc. etc., don't have officialy this short name. That's also thanks to UN and few retards that after dissolution of Czechoslovakia, didn't likre register that name.
Anyway, it's still only a thing of English speakers themselfes. Czech gubmint can do only that one thing, that they will finally register the name Czechia at UN's
