Texan living in AZ here who has made the I-8 trip from Houston to San Diego here.
West Texas is the bad part of the journey. Try to hit the stretch right before Yuma to be at dusk or dawn so you can sit back and enjoy AZ surrounded by the mountain ranges. The California mountain range is nice at anytime so long as there is decent visibility. New Mexico is a cakewalk.

Hardly, the French are some of the most hospitable and warm people out there if you can force out a bit of French and not act like they're expected to speak English. Anywhere out of Paris they are much more likely to be naturally such and signs that you're working to understand be able to fit into their culture will just take you further. Honestly, this applies to pretty much everywhere though. Most peoples will be warm and kind to foreigners if they don't have to put up with them being demanding assholes all the time and when they do have to, just be ready to show that you're trying to go the extra mile and be a proper traveller.
Also, make friends with females at hostels so you can go out with them even if you're not going to be able to fuck them. They'll get you into the best places, get you free drinks from guys wanting to fuck them, and oftimes they'll be up for a fuck at the end of the night. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there, because sweet fuck you'll never see them again if you don't make a good impression and stay in contact.
