Soviet Union pressured Finland and bolstered this pressure with military threat in various different matters. One them was military equipment purchases. They forced us to buy T-series tanks (54s,55s,72s) which had the PKT coaxial machine gun. Due to logistics the sister model of the PKT, the PKM, was chosen as the machine gun for Mech. Inf. After the end of cold war Finland has been shifting towards western gear in a fashion that is most cost effective. Therefore the PKM is still in use. Today all new purchases are western.
PKM is also very light and reliable for "long" 7,62 caliber machine gun. Pretty much all the other "long" 7,62 machine guns are so heavy that they need a fire team to operate. Negev and PKM are the only light "long" 7,62 caliber MGs.
