Wars are good when your country wins them, my friend. If that were not the case then I would not endlessly see Dutch posters posting that image of the Royal Charles being towed away by the Dutch Fleet.
>Peel
Nobody tainted by the 1829 emancipation can be in the running for greatest PM, my friend. Literally the original cuckservative.
>>57771854
What most uneducated people don't get is that the quote is to be considered in historical context though. Voltaire was writing about the 18th century HRE, which was a shadow of its former self. The medieval HRE was a very different beast.

Not if they are extremely costly in lives, money and reputation. Certainly not when the goldmines were already mostly in the hands of the eternal Anglo and the Boer republics posed no threat to Natal or the Cape.
It's hilarious that after all deaths you then give the country to Louis Botha.
>If that were not the case then I would not endlessly see Dutch posters posting that image of the Royal Charles being towed away by the Dutch
It's just banter m8
Catholic discrimination only served to piss people off. After emancipation the establishment was still Anglican and aristocractic. Repealing the corn laws was a great idea.

It was Roman in the sense of continuing the tradition of the Christian Roman Empire with the mandate of the Bishop of Rome. It that regard it was Roman. In having the Pope's blessing it was holy. And it was an Empire in the sense of there only being a single Empire - the Roman Empire. Only later, "Empire" became a term to describe multi-ethnic states; which the HRE was too, due to parts of Northern Italy, Sicily and Bohemia being part of it.

except that was not a tradition, only a few roman emperors did that. The greeks were the ones doing that kind of stuff

"Responsible" doesn't even begin to cover it. Let me explain the full story.
It's WW1 and Winston Churchill is Lord of the Admirality of the UK (which pretty much means he's in charge of the navy). The French have just managed to push back the Germans and have ground them to a stalemate. The Ottoman Empire has entered the war on Germany's side and the British start wondering whether it's possible to attack Istanbul by sea, take it and force the Ottomans out of the war. As such they start doing analyses and start making theoretical analyses. Three separate analyses, including one made by CHURCHILL HIMSELF, predicted that the British Navy and Army would not be powerful enough to take Istanbul and that attempts to do so would end in disaster. Churchill went with the plan anyway. Why? Because the British Expeditionary Force was getting all the glory and he wanted the navy to do something cool. He literally sacrificed the lives of hundreds of thousands in a doomed to fail operation because he wanted glory. The man was a psychopath and I don't understand why he wasn't dismissed or even arrested after WW1 ended.
I remember reading a quote by De Gaulle once that I will paraphrase here: "Churchill gets angry when he is wrong, I get angry when I am right. We're constantly angry at eachother." At first I thought it was De Gaulle just being an arrogant cunt but if you realize what Churchill did in WW1 (as well as his plans for Operation Unthinkable: pretty much an all-out war against the Soviets before WW2 was fully concluded), perhaps there was some truth to De Gaulle's words.

Pls don't talk bad about Bismarck he is the only German we can be proud of
>>57776184
He escalated things pre WW1 by giving Carte Blanche to Austria
He completely fucked up Based Otto's intricate foreign policy
Without this cripple we'd be close to US-tier in international influence while living in the comfy 1871 borders
>>57772177
It was too loosely organized to be an empire though. Holy and Roman are true to some extent.
>>57779537
It was an Empire because it was called an Empire. In fact, it was not just "an" Empire, it was "the" Empire. You're mistaking modern terminology with historical terminology. In the historical context, "Empire" did not mean what it means today.
>>57779478
Except for the part where the Carte Blanche was intended as a deterrent. What do you think should he have done? Ignore the Austrian request and lose the only remaining ally on the continent?
Fuck Bismarck.
>>57776184
>his only mistake was to think the Anglos would play fair
Britain had a treaty to protect Belgium if it was invaded. If it ignored that treaty everyone would say 'perfidious albion!!!'
There's no winning.
>>57781621
wow, that's really rude m8
I dont come and insult your greatest politician, you know?
How can you even hate a historical figure?
