Would you be amenable to a Union of all your states? You've got a pretty connected history, as well as cultural and linguistic similarities.

I'm not saying it's a secret, but generally words that aren't commonly used are replaced, not words like skin and sister. I also can't see a language just adopting another language's syntax. Lots of evidence suggests that old norse would be the basis of the English language, with old French and old English having heavy influence.
