Old flag of my county before they changed it to it's current abomination. It has the background of the See of Durham (one of the oldest in the Country and the Bishop sits in the House of Lords) combined with 4 black lozenges for all the coal mines that used to be here/the mining communities that still are here and finally the White Rose of York for our historic ties to Yorkshire and that we got a bit of the North Riding of Yorkshire in 1972

This flag was designed and used as an ensign for New South Wales in the early 1830s (at that time NSW was basically all of Australia and New Zealand, minus Western Australia and Tasmania, which were seperate colonies)
It went on to influence the Eureka flag, and later would become a symbol of Australian federation. But it never became our flag.
I think it would have been a nice compared to the generic blue/red colonial ensign we ended up with. And if we ever did have the same flag debates that we sometimes have today, all we would have to do is remove the union jack and we still have a perfectly good flag.
