What's the problem? Italy GDP per capita is the same as Japan, a country which most internet people unconditionally worship. Northern Italy is like a continuation of Switzerland in terms of wealth. Southern Italy has the second largest grey economies of OECD. So what exactly is the problem?

Serious answer: before the unification there were some radical differences between italian states from an economical, social and cultural point of view, some of which, especially the economical ones, still exist today (but not to the point where we can still be considered 5-6 states forced together anymore like >>57665739 said)
Basically, the first politicians Italy had were utterly incompetent in managing said differences, especially those concerning the south, which to this day remains the poorest part of Italy, to say nothing of criminal organizations.
Aside from north-south differences, the early politicans Italy often proved to be short sighted (for example, Italy was not strong enough to take part in WWI, but it did anyway just because, even though we managed to take back Trentino), corrupted and more focused on maintaning the power than building a strong nation. If Italy had:
-managed the north-south differences efficiently from the very beginning, instead of ignoring them
-extensively invested in an up-to-date and homogeneous industrial system throughout all the country
-stayed neutral during WWI and WWII
-somehow got rid of corrupted politicans
now we'd be a much different nation.
