Depends on the metal used but it stays sharp indefinitely. You strop it before every shave though. A strop is just a bit of leather that bends the edge back to razor sharpness after it gets warped from a shave. Metal > Hair.

It also gives a distinctly different feel from a foam. Much less lather, but the lather is thicker and seems to cling more.
You can find find shaving soap kits at almost any drug store. Walmart sells them.
