After independance, arab identity was used by some politicians to differentiate from muh colonial nations.
Television used arabic and egyptian movies flooded our countries so people related to these.
Then middle east conflicts pushed some people toward the arab identity too as an opposition to american imperialism.
Also for how much muslim it is now, it is probably due to gulf influence, also take a look at this this should confirm it.

If I became a Muslim and started practicing Sufi I wouldn't be expected to participate in the political side of things right? I would just have to follow the rules for myself? From older poetry I get the idea that people don't consider others Sufi's if they're actively involved in politics or things like that, but most of that poetry was iran centric and written around when Rumi was alive. Even read a story where a Sufi lost a court case and was killed because the judge thought of him as a liar, because a Sufi wouldn't find themselves in a courthouse.
