We lived there for at leat 6 years until we left due to political reasons. The country is beautiful looking, especially downtown (thanks Italy), i was too young to know what my country accually was but my father said it was slightly better than now.

PNG is a really rough place, its hot, humid and the country is just spectacular- massive mountain ranges and valleys. So when I was up there doing engineering for a mining company it was a step back in time in a lot of ways, we're sticking comms relay stations up on top of mountains which where state of the art and worth 10's of 1000's of dollars- but to actually build the tower, its all just brute manpower to build the foundations, cabin, solar cells, batteries etc. All has to be dragged up a hill by people.
The heavier stuff got dragged in by chopper of course, but only after a lot of work went into chainsaw out an area to do it.
People are amazing, they're fucking tough lads. They still have tribal warfare up there with bows, arrows, spears, the odd shotgun on a fairly regular basis and its mostly lawless in parts so you've got to watch yourself. Plus on top of that you've got Papua province rebels running around who cross the border after murdering Indonesian's and then the Indo army would launch kill teams after them- so your chances of finding a river clogged with dead people wasn't exactly uncommon.
At one point I was kind of keen on doing a bit of a 'Charlie Borman' and motorcycling across from Montreal to Vancouver, but that's off the books for various reasons so I might have to do it by car.
Lot of the Northwest Territories, Yukon and that always looked really interesting, so wouldn't mind seeing them as well, I will get to Canada... one day!
