I skipped the civil war part, and was born in the USA. My dad was in the US for a year the war broke out. My mother and my older brother were in Mogadishu when the fighting started. He promptly lost his job as soon as the government fell, and had to file for asylum since he had nowhere to go. He worked menial jobs, and saved up to bring my family. He even figured out a way to sponsor at least 20 of his family members out of Somalia in the mid 90's. He's my true hero tbeeh. We moved to the ghetto and worked our way up now to a decent middle-class lifestyle. Feels really good man when you look at things in perspective. Usually I feel like shit, but you gotta be a glass half full of guy to survive this world

My story isn't really anything intersting. I was born in the 3rd largest city in Brazil, and then my mom moved to a small city because she was a teacher there. After some time she had meningitis and it was pretty bad, so she managed to retire earlier. Some three years later we moved to the city where I was born and I've been living here ever since. I was born after the start of the war so I really didn't have anyone die. I live in the Midwest in a city with a huge somali population ( I think you can figure that out). Thankfully they really don't commit crimes at a crazy number, but they still aren't fully integrated. But 90% of the youngsters go to or will go to university so they are decently educated. We'll be great in 2 generations.
The Americans tend to be cool here, and I've never had an issue with anything, but that could be due to me being extremely integrated. I used to go to hillbilly country 5 days a week, in a city known for KKK activity, and I met alot of great people I still talk too. The USA truly is the GOAT destination for immigrants if you are compatible to the culture. I act the same in front of my white/black friends as I would with the Somalis

Arab Sudanese are extremely racist generally and seem to consider themselves unique (and much better) from african sudanese, if they even consider africans sudanese to begin with. I've heard a lot of outright shit that wouldn't fly in Norway in the short time i was in Port Sudan before moving out to El Fasher from arab sudanese about the african sudanese. Mostly how african sudanese "didn't belong" in Sudan and should fuck off.
Meanwhile, african sudanese rarely spoke badly about arabs, and mostly considered themselves a part of Sudan, together with arabs. I suppose the wealth of the arab sudanese is what gives them such a mentality.

I do agree that it's a bit weird. The underlying culture and material wealth can be similar for two countries but the level of development can be staggeringly different. One thing people always forget is that NS never voted for their "president". Omar Al-Bashair is hated and extremely unpopular. In the north we make jokes about how he showers at night but still wakes up black ( because he is obsessed with being Arab but we are Africans).
