Manual is more fun
Auto-manual is best performing but most expensive for maintenance
Automatic is simplest and probably best in dense urban conditions and when built right, like the old american truck transmissions, the cheapest to maintain

masterrace.

honestly, I would only consider getting an automatic if it had paddle-shift &/or I lived in a city like London. aka richfag.
>>
>>57592436
Literally the opposite is true. There's no skill required to driving a shitbox.

If your car is so awful that it needs push starting regularly then I'd agree with you.
>>
>>57592688
>it's nice to be in control
You can drive up to 60 km in the city. Modern automatic can handle extreme situations on this speed.
>cheaper servicing
True. But it's a question of money, not quality.
>masterrace
Empty word. It's like having a 'fast' Ferrari but you never really accelerate if you don't wanna wrap a tree with your body and be fined.
>>
>>57592705
No, it's really not. Most drivers can't keep up with the shifts required for an EXTREMELY high performance car, OR an automatic gearbox can do better. That calls for an automatic gearbox (manual selection of gears likely still applies, but not actually depressing the clutch etc.)

I had one (1) automatic car. The only pleasure I derived from driving it was driving it like a go-kart with one foot on each pedal, lel.
>>
Anyone else drove an automatic for the first time and breaked like a motherfucker when they wanted to change gear?

>>57592871
>driving in a city
literally why, and that's one of the qualifications I gave as a legitimate reason for owning own. Personally if I lived in snow-nigger land though I'd value the control gear-selection gave me regardless.

>Empty word
First off, high performance cars are mostly automatic. Secondly, no it's not. The PC lads are involved with gaming/building, as real petrol/gear heads are with driving. I'm somewhere between, truthfully, but prefer manual for 99% of situations. Especially in lower-performance cars, where the gearbox is likely to be shit anyway and shift in ways I wouldn't want it to, even if you press the """S""" button and have your foot flat.

Either way we should be glad we are still allowed to drive the way society and technology is going...
>>
>>57592871
Just to extrapolate on my point in >>57593103 re masterrace: There's people that drive from necessity, and people that drive for ENJOYMENT. I'm not big into tinkering with engines and shit, but I definitely fall into the latter camp. I did a driving ban at one point and it broke my heart.

it makes no sense, till you realise the differences: Firstly they HAVE to drive, because you have to drive to get anywhere. Secondly, it's a country built around roads not the other way around - look at their MASSIVE lanes etc. Also nobody is likely to buy a manual unless they're a very good/enthusiast driver by Murikan standards anyway.

Basically we have a much higher standard of drivers in this continent either way. On our side of this continent anyway... Not sure about the Southerners (or French, who seem to adopt that mentality.)

Actually the real reason manuals are more common here is because they allow for more effective utilization of the narrower power band of smaller engines. Autotragics would constantly shift into RPM ranges that are completely weak and useless. I'm not sure how well your American brain can comprehend this considering all the cars in your country have massive wasteful engines whose autotragics simply set the rpm at 2000 and blubber away and that you might start blubbering more nonense, too, but I thought I'd tell you anyway.

There is no feeling of relief. In fact I find it more unsettling than driving a manual because I never know what gear I'm in, therefore I can't match the engine tone at certain RPMs to certain speeds, therefore I constantly have to take my eyes off the road to check the speedometer. Also on longer auto journeys my left foot tends to go numb.

I can't tell, m8. no, we have MOT and stuff, but German requirements are stricter.

You pay a road-tax (£0 for electrics --> £200-odd for hungry-beasts) per year, any car older than 3 years needs an MOT (safety check) yearly.

Insurance depends on what cover you want and stuff. For a 17 year old boy in a 1.1L car it's probably £2000 / year, for me that would cover a Ferrari (even with my drink-driving ban)

Its not like you turn 16 and the DMV mails you a licence,

In Ontario you apply for your G1(written test) which allows you to drive ( with lots of limitations) with a licenced driver accompanying you. After 6 months of that you get the G2, (driving exam) Which allows you to drive by yourself (with limitations) and practice safe driving and Highway driving. Then you finally can apply for your G or full licence which you must take another road exam( with hwy driving).

If you are really bad you will keep failing,

I'm sure the reality of it is easier than here, but the procedure sounds far more complicated and lengthy. Here you just take a dozen theoretical classes with an instructor, pass a multiple choice test, take a minimum of a dozen practical lessons (though the average is around 20) with an instructor and pass your driving exam. You can get this done in under two months if you have enough time to spare. The only difference for new drivers is that they get higher fines and have a zero drunk driving limit in the first two years.
>>
>>57595656

Like here, do you shave with one of these? You only need one, it lasts for several lifetimes, and it gives the closest, cleanest shave possible... BUT you need to develop a couple skills in order to actually use it efficiently and it's also not idiot proof like a cartridge type. Here you can start driving straight away, but with a qualified instructor obviously. I literally just got behind the wheel when he stopped in front of my house, listened to the 20 second explanation of gears and what not to do, and I was off.. About 20 hours-30 hours of lessons (which comes down to about 12-20 as well I think) is enough for most people. There is a theoretical test you must pass before you can do the practical exam, but you can just study those from a book or CD if you don't want to pay for classes. Shit's expensive enough as it is.. My license cost around €1000,- I think, maybe slightly less.

Autos are okay, just not fun. You need just to go from a to b? When auto is for you.

>It took me all of 30 minutes to learn.
fucking lies. I'd love to see you do a hill-start, or hold it with clutch on a slope, after 30 minutes. By your logic it took me 5 minutes to learn to 'drive stick' -- took more like 10 hours to get competent, and I'm still mastering it (heel-and-toe like >>57591480 but that's racing techniques.)

As I said, they only very recently matched manual cars in efficiency and they are still more expensive to install or maintain -- efficiency of scale aside.
>>
>>57595919
The driving schools vary here from about 500$-800$ for the lessons,110$ to take each test

so about 800-1000$ total if you go to driving school
>>
>>57596037
>As I said, they only very recently matched manual cars in efficiency and they are still more expensive to install or maintain -- efficiency of scale aside.

The efficiency argument also doens't help if you live in a state (US or otherwise) where gas and/or car taxes make it appealing to get <2L engines.
>>
>>57595931
>>57596039

Here there's no limit on the number of lessons and shit (some EU cunts want 30+ hours with instructor) I did 10 hours with an instructor, luckily passed my theory first time with fuck all revision (lucky being the qualifying word) and then probably spent 40+ hours of driving with my parents. They have to pay insurance, and also I took 2 practical tests, failed the first.

Most people probably have 20+ hours instruction I'd guess.. At £20-30 an hour. Technically tho, you could pass your test the 2nd day after your 17th birthday if you passed your theory on day one.

>>57596132
true.

I already knew how to drive a car, Nigel. Learning stick was just familiarizing yourself with the nuance of the outdated technology. Clutch to start, clutch to change gears, hand brake to steady the car on inclines. Everything else is just logic or using your ears.

I don't believe we have a formal minimum, but the driving test here is stringent enough that you really need a proper routine when driving. Not looking into even a single street, or missing a single sign (in a 55 minute exam!) can be an instant-fail in the wrong circumstances.. So you either need a good bit of hours, or an intensive course. There are these 10-day crash courses in which you drive multiple hours for days in a row and go straight up to your exam.

Stopped is if you parked the car and don't want to set your parking brake, landing works as an engine brake to slow the vehicle down

yeah that's the specific stretch I meant actually. but the whole coast is similar scenery. Never seen the tulip fields IRL. When I said the windmills are everywhere - I mean they are - NL, Belgium, UK, DK.. Literally everywhere on North sea coast.. And even more so on the lowlands (also inland)

obvious troll is obvious mate, shouldn't have taken the bait. German cars are a shit load better, they consider the BMW/Mercedes/Audi a ""luxury"" item over there. Also most of Fords cars that sell well both sides of the atlantic (not talking the F150/Mustang stuff or super eco stuff) are German or British / combo of engineered.

I haven't driven in NYC specifically, but visiting Manhattan was part of the same vacation when I did drive in the US. Both Paris and Rome are leagues worse.
>>
>>57597425
In the parts that are grid-like and traffic controlled, you're still in aggressive competition with all the other motorists. And night time driving isn't a much smaller dick in the ass since there's no quiet hours in Manhattan. There's only the presence or absence of the work rush in the standard traffic flow.

Night driving is a lot better since there *obviously* are quieter hours - even round Time Sq at 2am it's going to move, because you've got multiple lanes and shit. 2am Trafalgar Sq tho -- you might queue..
