I am listening to a brilliant podcast series about WWI now by a guy called Dan Carlin called Road to Armageddon (Highly recommend it) and he makes the point that the old gentlemanly idea of warfare of bright colorful uniforms died in the war and the new world that came out of it was modern.
Anyone interested in a detailed description of WWI should listen to the podcast, it's heavy shit though.
