We think "lad" and "mate" seemed kinda funny (and quintessentially British) so we started using it ironically, sort of how everyone adopted the black twitter slang and started using it ironically before it got wordfiltered.

I've noticed a lot of London slang is a lot similar to Toronto slang, maybe it's just me tho but I could swear there's a lot of similarities and overlap.
But as to why, I think it's just because it's fun to say
