Not sure how you came to that conclusion based on that image.

Do a rough convergent series. You see that the European countries on the list have less and less patents.
>>

The Japanese have a homogenous society with high IQ natives and a strict education system that encourages, nay, forces its students to excel. Failing the entrance exam for a prestigious university is a disaster in that country. On top of that the Japanese government recently slashed the Social "sciences" from their universities because they're worthless wastes of time that produce graduates with zero marketable skills.

Europe has a lazy education system that is more focused on "feelings" and "letting students express themselves", has a "passing grade" mentality (in Dutch it's called the zesjescultuur or the culture of six, which is the bare minimum grade (out of 10) you need to pass an exam (actually 5.5 but it's rounded up to 6)) and on top of that a combination of the welfare state and mass migration from the third world encourages low IQ individuals to reproduce while high IQ individuals are penalized.

But look on the bright side: even if our societies are becoming less homogenous, we are producing less patent, our average IQ is dropping and the political debate becomes more and more infantile at least we will always have our "diversity", which is our strength... somehow.

Japan has a severe birth rate problem, don't get me wrong, but at least in 100 years Japan will still be Japan. 50% of its population will be senior citizens but it will still be the same country it is today. Our countries will radically transform in the following centuries.

Don't believe me? Look at Britain, where a man got arrested for quoting Winston Churchill, their greatest hero (their polls, not my words but that's a debate for another day) ad verbatim.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/10792895/Election-candidate-arrested-over-Churchill-speech.html

Since the days of Churchill, which is living memory for some people, Britain has already become a radically different country.

tl;dr: Japan is a meritocracy, Europe a socialist shithole

Then explain why Japan has higher birth rates than Germany, in spite of Germany's massive (and rapidly growing!) superfertile Muslim population.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-32929962

Japan has both more babies and more patents. And its largest religious minority? Christians, at barely 1%. Most of them either American soldiers stationed overseas or foreign teachers ie. productive foreigners. Their biggest foreign population overall? The Koreans, their neighbors.

Really, the entire list - China, Switzerland and Russia are under our jurisdiction.

Doesn't mean it actually shows technological innovation nor progress

>>57536596
Dude have you seen Japan's and SK's inventions? It's literally replicas of replicas constantly, in order to compete on statistics.
>>
>>57538682
wot

>>57536596
Not that I question the intelligence of the Japanese, but the real reason is that an 'invention' is basically defined as a new design patent. That doesn't mean they're breaking constant ground or something, it just means there's a lot of replication and patenting going on.
>>
>>57538312
For grants, European countries reach 290k in 2014, while Japan reaches 297k. Fairly close, though the Japan's grants have plummeted since 2013 (-12.7% decrease), so for 2015 they might actually be behind.

It's the best objective metric we have and it's the one Wall Street, OECD and Bloomberg use.

No one really knows what innovation or progress is until it's considered in retrospect.

This.

Also, countries have different laws regarding patents. For instance, in the US you can patent a "business model" (whatever than means), whereas in EU law, this isn't considered patentable. Generally, Europe has stricter laws when it comes to patentability (usefulness, novelty, etc) than other countries. Pic related would have never passed the mark at the EPO for instance.

Quality != quantity, but you probably guessed that by the absurdly high number of patents filled by China.

Patent grants are meaningful.

the action or process of innovating.
synonyms: change, alteration, revolution, upheaval, transformation, metamorphosis, breakthrough; More
a new method, idea, product, etc.
plural noun: innovations
"technological innovations designed to save energy"

noun
ˈpatnt/
1.
a government authority or license conferring a right or title for a set period, especially the sole right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention.
"he took out a patent for an improved steam hammer"
synonyms: copyright, license, legal protection, registered trademark
"there is a patent on the drug"

Patents are by literal definition invention, and inventions are literally innovations.
>>
>>57540061
Your sentence is absolutely meaningless, but Japan and Korea are genuine innovators indeed.

On the other hand, half of what China does (being conservative) is photocopying western inventions.
>>
>patents
Someone replicating an invention and tweaking a few things doesn't make it a new discovery
>>
>>57540158
did i say anything about chinese . they also copy japan ,korea and you know what there is nothing wrong in that westerners overprice their products so yeah china is the savior or 3rd world people
>>
Why doesn't the higher intelligence of nips and gooks translate into a higher standard of living? It seems they're about the same as NW-Europe, while working much more (at least South Korea does)
>>
>>57540219
>Someone replicating an invention and tweaking a few things doesn't make it a new discovery

Because a Ferrari is just a replica of the Model T with a few tweaks. Technology hasn't advanced at all.
>>
>>57540061
lower wages and nearby china provides cheap material. don't think product quality is a sing of workmanship. chinese consumer products from the same price range too are absolutely superior to european and american stuff.
>>
>>57540269
Westerners do not overprice their products for the mere pleasure of doing so (except apple and tesla motors, maybe). They are more expansive because of much stringent quality control (generally speaking). Chinese manufactures don't really give a shit. Chinese products can be good if you're lucky but they can just as well be utterly shitty. This is why they are cheaper.

No daily terrorist attacks sounds like an improved standard of living to me.
>>
>>57540219
Implying that in this day and age, when every single device has hundreds or thousands of components and knowledge is exponentially multiplying faster than anyone can imagine, people can make the kinds of huge discoveries we used to. Even in a single smartphone, you have a million innovations.

Tweaking and changing things slightly and slowly is in fact innovation, because that's all we can manage these days.

The west has very liberal economic policy.
One thing that comes to mind I've read once is that when you hire someone (I guess in a bigger company) you hire them for life.

Japan is apparently fine with the stagnant ecoomy as long as people keep their jobs? I think.

They're just more conservative on economic policy.

>Hentai
An artstyle or form of media

>Samurai
A social class

>Geisha
A profession

The first is extremely modern, the latter two outdated. So fucking what? Is Russia no longer Russian because there are no more Czars and Boyarin? Of course not, but if 70% of the children born in Moscow were non-Russians (as is the case in Frankfurt with non-Germans) then we would say that Moscow is on its way to becoming a non-Russian city (as Frankfurt is on its way to becoming a non-German city).

The Japan of today is still the same Japan as that of the Samurai, just without the Samurai because rifles made them outdated.
