IQ used to be a measure of mental age over chronological age, hence quotient, but now it uses standard deviations. A ten year old with an intellectual level of a college freshman would have an IQ of 180, but that formula is defunct because it doesn't match up properly. After all, mental growth is not linear.
So nowadays, IQ is a statistical measure. Just saying IQ 157 is dumb for the same reason that saying height 150 or 90 is dumb. It doesn't give a unit. Centimeters? Inches?
The most common norm for IQ is 100 and the most common standard deviation on tests is 15, though the Stanford Binet uses an SD of 16 and Cattell an SD of 24. With an SD of 15, 157 would be close to four SD's, or 1/30,000, 99.997th percentile. In a medium sized town with average intelligence, you could expect the smartest person to have that IQ. In the United States, only 10,000 people are at that level or higher.
