The biggest problem the communist world had was global trade embargoes with the west and larger cultural isolation.
Russian communism was very strange, more like state controlled capitalism, it was authoritarian, paranoid and didn't hold well to scrutiny. In many ways through the cold war, the west starved communistic nations of both trade and culture - if we hadn't, perhaps the communist regimes would have been allowed to flex and improve, and been more open to calls of changes. Perhaps not though, China seems to be doing a good job of keeping citizens in check.
