This is one of the main problems with the Indian independence movement as it happened. It was on the basis of creating an independent "India for the Indian people"based on ideas of self-determination, but logically, the only outcome was that Muslims in India would eventually want independence themselves, especially when they were used to historically ruling large parts of the subcontinent. Also, there had never been a concept of the Indian nation-state before as it was just a subcontinent of various empires and principalities of competing Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist rulers until it became part of the British empire. Indian nationalism is an illusion following a phantom of "indianness". The Hindus have nobody but themselves to blame for the Pakistan partition in that respect.
The only solution to prevent Pakistan from being formed was probably India remaining part of the British Empire and Indians both Muslim and Hindu working within the British system to improve their lot, but of course, Brits are total retards when it comes to managing their imperial territories. Pakistan was a mistake, but it's mostly a mistake of India's and Britain's, not so much of Jinnah's intentions. Jinnah was just caught up in the same nation-state spook that all Indians were caught up in.

You may have had this concept of "land of the Hindus", but this just referred to the kinds of people who lived in the general region and didn't correspond to the abstract idea of a nation-state, which originated in Europe and was later imported to India, where they eventually pushed for independence of the British mandate as a nation-state.

There has always been a conception of a geographical region of India being distinct and having common descent from emperor Bharat, since back in ancient times, even if it was politically divided (but most of these kings explicitly claimed this simialr ancestry and descendancy from Bharat). It wasn't a nation-state, but there is definitely a distinction between people from 'Aryavarta' or 'Bharat' and Mlecchas since before when you're talking about, so there is a precedent that pre-exists British colonialism..

There's a huge difference in saying "this is the land where X people who are descended from so-and-so dwell so we call it Y" and suggesting the existence of a nation-state. The former can be expanded or reduced at any time and can freely change associations depending on who is ruling it and who predominately lives there, but the latter is suggesting something more concrete and absolute. The former may suggest a land of origination, but generally the "ownership" of such a land was believed to be passed down from one generation of private rulers to the next. Nationalism however, suggests that Germany, for instance, isn't the property of the German emperor inherited from the German patriarchs of the past who reserve a certain right to bring in or kick out anyone they feel like, but rather is the shared property of the German people as a whole. In the same way, even if India was a distinct region inhabited by distinct groups of people who shared a common ancestry that was traceable to the heart of that region, this is a far cry from what the Indian independence movement sought to create, which was something new, not to mention intellectually alien, to India with its ideas of self-determination residing the collective inhabitants, rather than the power and privilege afforded to competing families and religious classes
