What is the closest thing to a favela in the US? Americans, pls post pictures of your shitholes. I want to compare them to ours.
>>
>>57505267
theyre usually individual houses that are just really down in the dumps and shitty, all in one neighborhood.
they arent piled on top of each other or concentrated in apartments
>>
isn't detroit a shithole but without hills and mountains?
>>
>>57505352
detroit isnt even that bad its just in disarray
the crime rate is still lower then your typical latin american city.

Our poorly-off cities are largely abandoned, not jam-packed with people. Detroit isn't violent so much as it is depressingly empty.

Such is the way of the Rustbelt.
>>
>>57505267
Sorry, we don't have anything as horribly third world as favelas. The worst we have are ghetto neighborhoods, but it isn't the living conditions that makes them shitholes, it's the poverty and crime rates.

In the South, shotgun houses are a pretty good sign you're in a bad neighborhood and will be shot if you stand around too long.
>>

I actually went there desu. We went to protest in whiteclay and then we helped build some houses on the reservation. It was unimaginable poverty, I had never seen anything like it. It's like leaving your backyard and somehow entering a genuinely, no hyperbole, third world country. Also, the ratty mangy dogs everywhere was gross.

Michigan in itself is just a sad place honestly. I'm not sure why homeless people don't just move there, live in abandoned homes, and turn their yards into gardens to feed themselves.
In fact that would be a cheap government project that we should be funding.

Whiteclay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2BwAjKRX3I
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiteclay,_Nebraska

It's a big issue in Nebraska. It's a dry reservation on the South Dakota side, but some guys through up a couple of shacks on the Nebraska side and started selling beer. No one really lives in the "town" (when I went back in 2011, only 2 people lived there full time) and yet the town sells 4-6 million cans of beer per year. All to the natives.

The protests are generally about pressure on the Nebraska government. The government enables sketchy behavior white simultaneously complaining about colorado pot. http://www.hightimes.com/read/nebraska-complains-about-colorado-weed-while-enabling-south-dakota-alcoholism

When I was a kid, I had to live in a couple bad neighborhoods.
If the house you live in comes with bars on the windows and screen doors, it isn't because it makes the house look good.
It's because burglary is a thing in that area.

Poor African American neighborhoods, in inner cities, are the closest equivalent.

Due to education's high cost, poverty is pretty cyclical. To get into a university you'll need higher-than-average grades, which are difficult to achieve if you have to work throughout high school, have uncaring or absent parents, and need to take care of relatives.

>>
>>57505732
That's a good idea, but capitalism won't let it happen

All of those abandoned houses are still private property. Any that fall into the jurisdiction of the city get demolished, but most are owned by Detroit's disappeared black middle class. People in Chicago or New York keep the deed to their grandmother's old house in case somebody ever wants to buy it.

Many of those houses are for sale for literally nothing (I'm talking less than $10,000), but most property owners are unwilling to sell due to hopes that the property values will appreciate

So I did a project about 2 years ago in my geography on urban decay in America. I'll share some of the pictures from my presentation.

The most typical areas in the US which tend to be shitholes are in the Rust Belt in dead manufacturing centers (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania). Then you have some shitty places in the Deep South and some shit places out West in California.

Obviously I'm missing some places, but it's more of a picture of the shittiest places here.

First up is Camden, New Jersey. It and Philly tend to look pretty shitty.

So aside from all the modern shit, here's a little blast from the past for fellow Americans or something foreign people may not have known.

The worst looking place I've ever seen in the US through its history was probably the South Bronx in the 1970s and 80s. Apparently, NYC was on a strict budget and the city chief just said "fuck it" and cut off funding for fire services to the South Bronx.

Eventually, 50% of the South Bronx straight up just burned down. The whole fucking place was just razed by fires every night.

Overhead shot of the area.

Reminds me of how some families live in Muncie. Granted they're not jammed together in an urban setting but a similar poverty feel to it.
>Me and my buddy in college play a lot of ingress (geolocation app game)
>Occasionally we ride along with this one woman who knows my buddy and also plays ingress
>Her minivan is absolutely filthy, but being in college and having been in other people's cars its nothing really new
>That changes when she occasionally brings her kids along when we do ingress stuff or when she straight up brings them along when we're drinking/partying at a friends place
>Feel rather uncomfortable with all of us swearing and drinking with little kids (5-6 years old) present
>Her house has multiple tenants besides her kids and is absolutely filthy, I'm pretty damn sure at least one of the tenants was a crack addict (don't ask me how I know)
>Apparently she was a student at the university until she got knocked up and the dad just left, leaving her to raise the kids
And that's how I learned about how a lot of other Americans have to deal with raising a family. Apparently she's trying to get back in the uni with some financial aid but it's not looking too good.

So, it seems like in Lat, poor neighboorhoods are mostly densely populated, badly constructed and designed, clusters of people, with shitloads of families living there.

While, in the US, the poor neighboorhoods are well constructed and somewhat planned hoods that become depopulated and therefor, decay with time.

While in Lat, the bad neighboorhoods are violent because they are full with low-income people that end up resorting to crime, in US their slums are violent because they are abandoned, empty places that no one cares to improve or regulate and therefor become a place of operation for crimminals...

Fascinating...
