I'll give you the short story. Basically small group of political/economic elite decided to build their entire economy on raw material exports and pretty much fucked everyone else over in the process. Those people who were fucked over rebelled or launched revolutions, mostly failing in the process. Now many poor people join gangs because it's either that or taking a shit job in the fields, a maquila, or the informal sector.
I could literally go to town on this shit.

They have the biggest selection of dishes. Lots of dishes originated their. Authentic original cookbooks from El Salvador have over 100 recipes easily. They have some fruit and vegetables that don't grow anywhere else in the world like lorocco, pito, manarillos, pincuyo, grebuyones, sajeritos, etc.,.
Tourism is strong for the coast, el impossible (national park), volcanoes, water parks, reserves, Mayan ruins, and museums. American developers have built resorts for surfing.
El Salvador has the biggest malls in all of Central America and the most global franchises and a few of their own.
A huge American, Canadian, and European ex-pat community. You can find the stuff from home so you don't feel homesick abroad.
El Salvador has more coffee shops than Costa Rica and a deeper background into coffee. Not enough marketing for this, but nearly everyone drinks coffee their.
Virtually no black people.
A nice house in a nice part of the country costs more than one here in Orlando, FL.

I'm just stating how El Salvador is the best of Central America. Come to the US and Salvadorans are known for being cheap like Jews, but they have open business and restaurants wherever they are. I've never seen a Guatemalan, Costa Rican, Nicaraguan, Panamanian restaurant from Miami to NYC. Most Honduran restaurants serve Salvadoran food with baleadas as the only real Honduran dish apart from the cheese and cream.

At least in Florida and Virginia there are a ton of Nicaraguan places, just not as many as Salvadorean.
They all market their food as "Central American" to get a wider audience though.

There's a huge difference between all of those countries, and it lies in colonial organization
Gran Colombia was made up of three separate political entities which joined together: The Captaincy-General of Venezuela, The Royal Audience of Quito, and the rest of Nueva Granada falling under the jurisdiction of Bogota. These three regions had their own culture, history, racial makeup and problems.
The Same goes for United Provinces
Peru-Bolivia weren't even part of the same Viceroyalty.
However, everything between Chiapas and Costa Rica belonged to the same Captaincy-General from the beginning. It's failure is more comparable to a scenario where every state of Venezuela decided to make it's own country, it was totally absurd then and it's totally absurd now, we are far too similar and face the same problems, there's no reason why Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua shouldn't be one country. Costa Rica too, but they're to proud and nationalistic, and would never join a state they perceive as inferior to their own.
