It gave you a bigger population+more land and closer access to w.Europe and other waterports for export/import. From my point of view, when gorbachev did the putch (revolution-like action), USSR was falled. And it was not like logic thing, it was fall in cold war as well. Gorbachev was in USA before it all and after he taked nobel prize (looks, like bonus for it all, like not honest activity).
