Holy fuck, we REALLY should have let the south secede, they're dragging the whole nation down
>>
>>57493452
Seriously
>No Hillary inevitable president
>No Trump destroying the GOP
>Less social conservatism in Washington

Then again do we really want another backwards third world country with ethnic problems in the world? The North and West would be better without the south, but the South would literally be below Mexico if it weren't for the USA being united
>>
>Alaska
Wut. Is the average person really that rich, or is it a small number of really rich people because of the oil bringing the average up (which is easy to do in a state with a small population).

>throw over half a million lives at reconquering a country you don't even want
>Southerners are the dumb ones
>>
>>57493791
They have a good welfare state, but cost of living is ridiculously high.
>>
>>57493898
Everyone was dumb in the 19th century compared to now

Plus Slavery was abhorrent and even though it meant keeping their backwards asses in our developed industrial country we had to destroy slavery
>>
>>57493925
Why? They have low taxes because of the oil fund, and a low population density. Is the high cost of living just because of the cost of shipping things up there and providing goods and services in the cold?
>>
>>57493898
Slavery held back industrialization. It needed to end for the US economy to develop.
>>
>>57493791
Yeah it's the oil, same as with North Dakota.

>>
>>57494095
Wtf are you talking about? Slavery is the reason USA developed so quickly.
>>
>>57494016
Literally every country in the world dropped slavery voluntarily without intervention from an outside force. Farm mechanisation was imminent within a matter of years, slavery would not have continued indefinitely, nobody needed you to go in and end it (not that the union gave a fuck about slavery in the first place).

>>57494095
Oh, is that why after the war the South quickly became a shining gem of industrial might?
>>
>>57494156
Compared to other semi fuedal states it was developed. Unpaid labor = reduced domestic demand = you have to rely on exports for income.

>>57494191
Nobody said the south developed into a good place to live, but they became more developed than they would have been if slavery wasn't abolished.
>>
>>57494286
>literally burn, wreck, and upend the economy the entire region
>"we're why they're developed"
This fucking arrogance
>>
>>57494442
>wahhhh won't somebody think of the slave owners :'(
Talk shit get hit. Capitalism is a superior economic system to semi fuedalism.
>>
>>57494191
If the south wasn't trying to preserve slavery, why were southern politicians very open about the cause of secession being slavery?
>We have dissolved the late Union chiefly because of the negro quarrel. Now, is there any man who wished to reproduce that strife among ourselves? And yet does not he, who wished the slave trade left for the action of Congress, see that he proposed to open a Pandora's box among us and to cause our political arena again to resound with this discussion. Had we left the question unsettled, we should, in my opinion, have sown broadcast the seeds of discord and death in our Constitution. I congratulate the country that the strife has been put to rest forever, and that American slavery is to stand before the world as it is, and on its own merits. We have now placed our domestic institution, and secured its rights unmistakably, in the Constitution. We have sought by no euphony to hide its name. We have called our negroes 'slaves', and we have recognized and protected them as persons and our rights to them as property.
-Robert Hardy Smith, CSA congressman
>>
>>57494635
Anyone who makes an effort to actually learn something more than what they're taught in primary school or what family/their chosen media tells them will be able to tell you that the South seceded over slavery. The war initially wasn't so much about ending slavery as much as preserving the Union, and I think that's where the disconnect often comes.

Emancipation was more of a means to undermine the South's infrastructure than anything else, most people in power (including Lincoln) would've rather followed the European model and pressured the South to abolish slavery willingly.
>>
>>57494523
>Feudalism: the dominant social system in medieval Europe, in which the nobility held lands from the Crown in exchange for military service, and vassals were in turn tenants of the nobles, while the peasants (villeins or serfs) were obliged to live on their lord's land and give him homage, labour, and a share of the produce, notionally in exchange for military protection.
>Capitalism: an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
Now which one of these systems sounds more like what was in place in the pre-Civil War south? Do you seriously think feudalism = people working in fields?

>>57494635
I never said the chief trigger for secession wasn't slavery, I said slavery was on its way out whether the war was fought or not because within a matter of years farm mechanisation would have made the institution of slavery obsolete.

Also, politicians and wealthy landowners are not representative of the entire CSA. Under 10% of CSA citizens were slave owners, and they sure as hell weren't the ones fighting the battles.
>>
>>57494823
I said semi feudal for a fucking reason dumbass. Obviously there aren't knights and lords and kings in the south. However, slavery being the dominant form of production resembles fuedalism in that people are forced to work without pay and in return they get subsistence from their owner. The main difference was that peasants had to enter into an agreement with the fuedal land owners because they had no other way to obtain housing and food. You became a slave in the south because of your race.

Also mechanization made cotton cheaper, which increased the demand for cotton, which increased the demand for slavery. However, that was only the case because the south could export their goods. If they couldn't, the fact that slaves were unpaid and therefore couldn't increase domestic demand would have forced the south to abolish slavery.
>>
>>57495180
For a lot of places throughout a good amount of Medieval history, peasants could often come and go to whichever lord/land as they pleased

>>57494823
Were they really able to see farm machinery in their future at that point though? To them, their main source of wealth and production was threatened without any recompense. Not justifying them, but just throwing it out there
>>
>>57493156
>riley spouts the 'lower hdi than mississippi' meme while this exists
>>
>>57495455
That's what I was arguing. Slavery could have ended in a much more gradual way, like freedom of womb laws, but instead the entire Southern economy was upended in one fell swoop that caused over 100 years of poverty and racial tension.

Plus, as British cotton production in India had ended the rest of the world's sole reliance on the South for it, economic pressure and sanctions would have forced the CSA to end it for that reason as well. There's no way that the CSA would have continued as some sort of rogue apartheid slave state until like the 1960s, which is what some people seem to believe.

Slavery would have completely ended by the 1890s AT MOST and the process probably would have been much more gradual and less disastrous for all parties involved. Even Lincoln was planning to repatriate ex-slaves back to Africa.

FUCKING OIL LEACHES GET OUT

plus you won't find any jobs. the fields have shut down because the price of oil is so cheap

don't come anywhere near the dakotas, we don't want you.

also fun fact, wyoming is green not because of oil or anything like that, but because a ton of multi-millionaires and billionaires live there. it's not like north dakota where you can move there and grab a piece of the pie.

>>57493898
Reconstruction was meant to redevelop the south into a more modernized economy and integrate former slaves into proper, productive citizens. Too bad Johnson and congress cocked it all up, got involved in political infighting, and to top it all off ended it too early. Once troops were withdrawn the South had a major chimp-out where basically reverted to a (much poorer) antebellum system, aka "landowners reap all the prosperity while blacks are you used as scapgoats to distract poor whites and keep them working their landlord's land."
