Thats a non sense.

In Mex, Guerrero and Tamaulipas. That's disputed territory by the cartels, every now and then after a drug lord falls, a internal war is made to decide who controls the transportation rutes on the zone, or "plaza".
They left heads in public places, hang the bodies of sicarios in bridges and start shootings. The whole point of these things is to make the opposite organization feel scared.
The basic thing, is; Stay as far away as you can from shady people or places. I can assure you that 98% of the deaths in the Narco war are not inocente people, but bad shit happen to good people as well.

Nuclear weapon test site.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semipalatinsk_Test_Site

It's funny Nevada doesn't have the red spots as well, considering the tests sites in that area.

Colombian country side is exponentially more dangerous that normal cities around the eje cafetero.

In the yellow part you can expect some beggar here and there and maybe some robber with a knife.
In the red part there's almost no state presence and if you're unlucky you'll find yourself in an area dominated by a guerrilla/cartel like FARC or ELN, so you can expect being kidnapped by a bunch of tough guys with machine guns if they see you're a foreigner. Not to mention the terrorism, constant warfare ops in the little towns, anti personnel mines and cocaine plantations.

Although with the peace talks we're supposed to be in a cease fire so maybe things are a bit better
